What is Physiotherapy and Why is it Important?

on May 4, 2020

While physiotherapy is commonly known throughout the world, it has only just begun to bloom in Malaysia. We have probably heard of the term “physiotherapy” but we may have different definitions on what it actually is. This is the underlying cause of many common “injuries” being (drug dependant) when physiotherapy could have been the better solution.

What is physiotherapy? In short, physiotherapy is a profession that treats abnormal pain and issues like injuries, physical disability, non-communicable diseases and conditions. Physiotherapists are trained and licensed to recover an individual’s physical and physiological function in order to improve the quality of their daily lives. They do their best work in the acute phases of injuries whereby the pain is most excruciating. While most rely on medication (painkillers) to take the pain away, they rely on their hands and modalities to manage the pain and treat the cause.

Our physiotherapists are always happy to help. We emphasize on educating people on injury management at home. We may not be psychologists, but we’re always here to listen and encourage those who are down in the dumps from their injury or pain – after all, it’s nice to have a friend.

Fields of Physiotherapy

Physiotherapists function in 3 main areas of practice which are:

  1. Musculoskeletal (a.k.a orthopaedic physiotherapy) – mainly focuses on conditions pertaining to soft tissues, bones and joints such as sprains, strains, arthritis, back pain, incontinence, workplace related injuries, and restricted mobility.
  2. Neurological – Focuses on disorders of the nervous system such as strokes, acquired brain injuries, spinal cord injuries, brain surgery, multiple sclerosis and Parkinson’s disease.
  3. Cardiorespiratory – Mainly deals with heart and lung disease such as asthma, emphysema, chronic bronchitis and also post heart/lung surgeries among others.

In relation to these 3 fields of practice, physiotherapists may also specialize in a number of different areas including sports medicine, children’s and women’s health and also fitness.
