 Assessment

Before beginning your treatment plan with us, you will first be given an Initial Assessment by one of our physiotherapists, during which:

  • Your chief complaint and point of injury will be collected
  • A Physical and Pain assessment will be taken through observation, palpation and examination of mobility, muscle girth/power, accessory movement, etc.
  • If appropriate, Isometric Testing will be included to inform analysis and goal-setting
  • Diagnosis will be done according to the results from the Assessments and Testing and based on your subjective feedback

Following this, we will work with you to determine short-term and long-term goals for your rehabilitation based on which your physiotherapy treatment and therapy plan will be developed. We are now ready to begin your recovery!

Physiotherapy Treatment

Stabilize

As a first step, our physiotherapists will look to Stabilise your injury/impairment to help prevent any further damage as well as reduce the pain and swelling caused.

For acute injuries, we apply the PRICE (protect, rise, ice, compression, elevation) model to ensure appropriate initial treatment and ensuring you are comfortable to proceed to other stabilisation therapies.

For more chronic cases, thermal therapies will help with the pain and also help reduce stiffness through muscle relaxation and blood circulation to the affected area.

Finally, therapeutic ultrasound and electro-modalities are applied to further relieve pain and also enhance the healing process.

These initial therapies allow the injured/impaired body part to become more stable and prepared for re-mobilisation and return to fitness.

Mobilize

Mobility is highly prioritised in the early phase of physiotherapy treatment regardless of the type of intervention (surgical or non-surgical). In particular for orthopaedic injuries the range of motion, strength and flexibility of the affected body part can be impaired. Therefore, Mobilisation is a key step on the journey to full recovery.

Initial approaches to improve mobility will be focused more on hands on, manual techniques such as soft tissue manipulation and joint mobilization/manipulation. In addition, approaches such as heat therapy and cupping therapy will be used to complement the hands-on techniques. Finally, forward, backward and lateral dynamic movements can be included as well as isokinetic exercises to begin increasing range of motion.

As the rehabilitation progresses, the approach will gravitate more towards active exercises that focuses on function of the affected body part and return to active daily living. Therefore, exercises will be enhanced by variation in visible input, surface stability, speed of exercise performance, resistance and complexity of the task.

Return to Daily Life

As previously mentioned, Return to Daily Life refers to the point in recovery from an injury/impairment when a person is able to go back to their daily activities. By treating the impairment, the goal is to relieve any pain and body limitations in order to provide function with ease. The main physiotherapy strategy in completing this road to recovery is focused on the medical aspects of the injury/impairment (symptom management) and also of course rehabilitating the root cause of the injury.

The aspects covered during this phase are continuous improvement in:

  • Pain
  • Mobility
  • Strength
  • Coordination, and
  • Balance

A key point that we address before your return to activities of daily life is ensuring that you are knowledgeable on the injury/impairment and providing guidance to help self-manage and continue improvement of the condition. This is a significant aspect in maintaining progress for long-term recovery and a core part of our philosophy at Rehamed Therapy.

Sport Therapy

Return to Sporting Life

For many people whose daily activities involve exercise and sports, a Return to Sporting Life is just as important. This recovery and rehabilitation programme takes you beyond the return to daily life and enable you to go back to playing sports and, importantly, participate at a pre-injury level (at the very least). In the case an injury is minor it might not require you to stop competing but for major injures requiring long rehabilitation training programs, our Sports Therapy approach aims to bring you back to your athletic performance levels.

Recovery focusing on Return to Sport is focused on all the medical aspects covered in Return to Daily Life as well as restoration of performance related abilities:

  • Pain, Mobility, Strength, Coordination, Balance (as above)
  • Power, Speed, Agility, Reaction, and Endurance

Of course, exercises prescribed for return to sport depend on the individual and the pri-mary sport you’re focused on. For example, when a footballer is looking to play again, they require agility through footwork exercises enabling quick sprinting changes of direction, blocking and tackling, etc., core balance and strengthening, as well as UDP programme to enhance reaction times, and endurance training to improve overall performance.

Within our Sports Therapy framework, we tailor the programme to your sporting needs to provide an optimal Return to Sport for your everyday life.

Strength & Conditioning

Prevention

As a final stage of your journey, we want to ensure that your recovery is long-lasting and, just as importantly, your risk of re-injury is minimised. Through our Prevention & Re-Conditioning (P&R) programme, we do just that.

P&R bases on Strength & Conditioning but focuses on patients who have been discharged from rehabilitation, recurrences of an injury due to previous potentially improper physiotherapy treatment, or those unable to play sport due to previous injury however a lack of strength has hindering them to participate. At Rehamed Therapy, we apply both Sports Therapy and S&C programmes to identify the strength and weaknesses (for re-conditioning), emphasized on the injury site, and a complex program is designed pertaining to the injury. Our sessions are prescribed by our sports science and exercise science specialists highly trained in developing programmes catering to your specific needs.

Furthermore, we typically advise our patients to focus on P&R to further enhance their strength, coordination and balancing more specific to their goals and objective. Therefore, this program will also benefit not only recovered injury patients, but also patients who have previously completed rehabilitation and are looking to enhance the performance.

Geriatrics

Geriatric care management is the process of planning and coordinating care for the elderly with physical impairment(s) to meet their long-term care needs, improving quality of life and maintaining their independence for a long as possible.

As we age, we are more prone to falling, muscle elasticity and extensibility decreases, sarcopenia occurs, reaction slows and bones become brittle. Our geriatric care focuses on fall prevention. When an older person, falls, there severity of injury is higher, the rate of recovery is slower. Our physiotherapists work to prevent the rate of muscle atrophy, or at the very least, maintain the muscle mass and strength to lower the risk of falling and lower the severity of injury in the event of a fall.

Through our Balance Tracking System, we draw out a program for the patient and during the first assessment identify the risk of falling. The program for the patient will emphasize the weak areas and exercise is prescribed accordingly. Continuous tests are repeated after several weeks to demonstrate improvement and evaluate patients’ progress.

Pregnancy (Pre- and Post-Natal) Fitness

As part of our wide service range, we also provide therapy and exercise programmes for pregnant women both during pregnancy and after childbirth. Our pre- and post-natal exercises are designed to help give guidance on proper posture & positioning, release muscle tension and joint stiffness as well as prescribe strengthening exercises and stretches in safe manner for both child and mother.

With our physiotherapy treatment expertise, we look to bring the following benefits through our pregnancy and postpartum programs:

  • Through exercises deemed safe for the individual pregnant woman, we build strength in muscles weakened during pregnancy, limit weight gain for easier post-natal recovery, and improve cardiovascular fitness
  • Promote increased body awareness and a positive body image via posture reinforcement and proprioception training, and instil the mentality and discipline in exercise that will benefit the birthing process
  • Reduce “recovery time” after birth. The general rule is 9 months up, 9 months down; through training and specific exercises we can help reduce the time back to normal

We know that exercise during the pregnancy also improves the health of the baby and ultimately it is our most important aim to ensure a healthy mother and baby for their lives.
